In order to bring abundant light into a north-facing house, the exterior wall is offset at the stairwells to create south-facing windows that draw light down the stair to the floor below (shown to the left of the front door). This is repeated for the next stair down, just visible here. The stairs continue outside on their way down to the lake.

The Great Room receives south-facing light from clerestory windows over the entry and garage, just visible here above the porch roof. The front door is intentionally understated in order to set up the drama of the Great Room within.
